A digital career development platform has just been launched for students at Washington University in St. Louis’ McKelvey School of Engineering.
Nearly 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students receive a top-notch engineering education at the McKelvey School. While all students are supported by the University’s Career Center, engineering students needed additional resources that directly aligned to the specific engineering pathways they are pursuing.
Responding to that need, the McKelvey team partnered up with uConnect, makers of the only career services marketing system for higher education, to build McKelvey Industry Connect, the new digital career development platform for the WashU engineering community.
On McKelvey Industry Connect, students can easily access the full range of career content and opportunities all in one user-friendly space. In digital ‘Career Communities’, users can find all of content curated by specific industries, such as ‘Biotechnology & Healthcare’ or ‘Cybersecurity,’ allowing students to explore advice, resources, and opportunities aligned to their engineering career interests. Career content is also organized into Communities based on Majors, and on identity or affinity groups -- Multicultural, Women & Engineering, LGBTQ+. This format ensures that all students are able to find the career support that will help them along their unique pathways based on their identities, interests, and affinities.
Alumni of McKelvey will also find a space specifically for them on the platform, to find early and mid-stage career resources and opportunities, or to learn how to get involved in supporting current McKelvey students along their pathways. The platform is also designed to engage industry partners by providing them a streamlined and easy way to share opportunities, advice and guidance as to what they’re looking for in future hires, or learn about ways to get involved with the McKelvey community.
“McKelvey Industry Connect, our new platform, has streamlined and enhanced our ability to support students in an individualized yet scalable way,” says Kelli Delfosse, Director of Industry Relations and Career Engagement at McKelvey. “This is important to student success under normal circumstances. Under unusual circumstances such as we are in now, ensuring our students can easily find the support they need from wherever, whenever, becomes even more vital.”
To encourage students to explore the wealth of support and opportunity available to them, automated newsletters are sent from the platform, each uniquely customized to each student based on the interests they’ve indicated in Career, Major, and Inclusive Community groups. This way, only the career content that is of interest to each student will arrive in their inboxes. Alumni, faculty/staff, and industry partners can also indicate their interests and receive customized newsletters accordingly.
