Washington College, a small liberal arts college in Chestertown Maryland, is highly committed to preparing their students for meaningful and successful careers upon graduation, and supporting them long after they leave campus. The first of the ‘five pillars’ of the Washington College Standard states, “By providing hands-on learning and meaningful job experiences alongside traditional instruction, we encourage students to craft the education that’s right for them.”
Always focused on providing the best possible support for students, alums, and the wider College community, the team at the Center for Career Development decided it was time to expand and enhance their digital presence. While a wealth of career support, resources, and opportunities have always been available to all Washington students, students weren’t engaging with these resources as frequently or as early in their journeys as the Career team knew they should. Realizing that their digital native students wanted to be able to access career services online, and that creating a streamlined digital career development experience would strengthen their ability to connect with more students, more often, the Center for Career Development partnered with uConnect, makers of the first virtual career center, to build https://careerconnx.washcoll.edu/.
Washington’s new virtual career center serves as a single, online access point for all things career, making it exceptionally easy for students, alums, faculty & staff, and the entire community to be aware of, and able to quickly access all career resources and opportunities - from anywhere at anytime.

Technical integrations with tools like Handshake for jobs and events, PeopleGrove for mentors, and Vault for industry guides, pulls content and data automatically into the virtual career center, so that students need only visit one site in order to access this wealth of content. The content pulled in from these systems, as well as videos, student success stories, news, and resources are not only aggregated in the virtual career center, they are also curated into digital ‘Career Communities’ based on career and academic interests - such Education and Human Services - audience - such as Alumni - and identity/affinity groups - such as First Generation Students. This model helps students easily find the resources and information specific to their interests and affinities.
It’s not just current students who will benefit from the new virtual career center - Alums, Employers, Faculty & Staff, Prospective Students, and Parents/Families will also all find a dedicated digital space, with information and resources tailored specifically to them in a streamlined user experience. With this model in place, the Career Development team can better connect with and serve the many important stakeholders who contribute to the success of students and the institution.
