Student Outcomes Data Visualization Tool Benefits Enrollment, Current Students, and Institutional Effectiveness for Illinois Institute of Technology

Illinois Institute of Technology, a private, technology-focused research university in Chicago, provides over 6,000 students each year ‘an education that focuses on preparing students for fulfilled lives after graduation and for careers that contribute to solving important problems facing humanity,’ as is stated in their mission.

For years, the Career Services team at Illinois Tech has been carefully collecting student outcomes data - information about students’ occupations and/or educational pursuits, salaries, employers, and locations in the first year out of school.

This outcomes data is incredibly valuable. For prospective students, it can paint a picture of what the future can hold should they choose to enroll at Illinois Tech. For current students, it can inspire and direct pathways, encourage purposeful engagement, and eliminate uncertainty about the potential outcomes of the investment in education. For the institution, it can inform enrollment, program development and advising strategies, and help faculty and advisors guide students towards rewarding and attainable post-graduate outcomes.

Yet, like many institutions, for many years Illinois Tech was collecting this invaluable information, but didn’t have an effective way to share it with the many stakeholders for whom easy access to this data would be highly beneficial.

Recognizing that making outcome data universally accessible within an easy-to-use interface would positively impact every part of the institution, Illinois Tech partnered with uConnect, makers of the first and only virtual career center, and rolled out their Outcomes Data Visualization tool

“Our Outcomes Data Visualization tool has become an essential means of concentrating institutional focus on the importance of career services,” says Thy Nguyen, Associate Vice Provost for Career Services. “The benefits of readily accessible outcomes data extend into every function of our institution - enrollment, program development, advising, institutional planning, employer relations, and beyond.”

Within the new tool, Illinois Tech’s student outcomes data is available to anyone at any time online, within a user-friendly, interactive interface. Users can filter outcomes data by graduation year, school, and major; and for undergraduate data, by internship status as well. The data visualization will then automatically populate with the correct data for the chosen demographic, revealing First Destination (employed, pursuing additional education, etc.), Top Employers, Starting Salary, Employment Locations, and Top Universities, Degree Types, and Fields of Study for those students continuing on their education journey.

“We commend Illinois Tech’s commitment to leveraging outcomes data to better inform prospective students, current students, and drive improvements at the institutional level” says David Kozhuk, Founder and CEO of uConnect. “There has long been a need for greater data transparency in higher education. We are thrilled to support an institution leading the charge in such transparency, and hope others will follow their lead.”
