St. Edward’s University Unites Campus Community Around Career Development with New Virtual Career Center

St. Edward’s University, a Catholic liberal arts institution in Austin Texas, has recently launched a new virtual career center to increase student access and engagement with career services.

St. Edward’s students have always had access to a wealth of career resources and support through the Office of Career and Professional Development. As students have come to expect and need services available online, however, the office has seen a decline in student engagement with their in-person offerings.

Recognizing that early and frequent engagement with career services leads to better prepared students with more informed ideas about their career aspirations, the St. Edward’s team set out to create a comprehensive, virtual career center to encourage students to engage in career development early and often, whenever and from wherever they’d like. To help them build such an online space, they partnered with uConnect, makers of the first and only virtual career center.

The new virtual career center serves as a single home for all career resources, events, opportunities, and their career coach, making it easy and straightforward for all students to be aware of, and readily access, all things career.

“A primary goal of a St. Edward’s education is to prepare students to succeed and make a difference in whatever field they choose to pursue upon graduation. The Career and Professional Development team seeks to serve as guides and partners to students, helping them along every step of the career exploration journey,” says Jason De La Rosa, Director of Career and Professional Development at St. Edward’s. “What we came to realize is that in order to reach and support as many students as possible, we needed to connect with them where they are - online. With the emergence of COVID-19, the need to better support students virtually has only become greater.”

This and other career content is featured on the virtual career center in ‘Career Communities’ based on school - such as School of Natural Sciences - or identities/affinities - such as Students with Disabilities. Within the Career Communities, students will find jobs, employers, career coaches, news and advice, and resources curated based on career or affinity interest. This model helps students discover the specific career content and support relevant to their interests, without needing to wade through content that may not be relevant to them.

It isn’t just current students who will benefit from the new virtual career center - employer partners, alumni, faculty & staff, and parents & families will also find spaces just for them on the new platform. Employer partners now have all information and opportunities for engagement readily available in one streamlined space. Alumni can visit the virtual career center as they transition jobs or careers. In recognition that career conversations happen all the time all over campus, the virtual career center features a space for faculty and staff to come and find information so that they may be better informed when discussing career pathways with students in advising appointments or casual interactions. Last but not least, parents and families will find a space dedicated to them, where they can find resources for supporting their students’ career development. Prospective students and families can also access the virtual career center, to learn about the rich career development experience available to St. Edward’s students.

“The uConnect team is honored to be working with St. Edward’s, to help connect more students with the invaluable career support, services, and resources available to the St. Edward’s community,” says David Kozhuk, Founder and CEO of uConnect. “This is just the start of what we know will be an impactful partnership.”
