“In the Smeal Business Career Center, we work to facilitate the development of employability skills in our students, in collaboration with companies, alumni, and academic departments. Our uConnect platform has revolutionized the way we engage students, as well as our collaborators, in this effort. Our digital presence, once arcane, is now a major strength,” says Ashley Rippey, Managing Director of Smeal’s Business Career Center.
The Smeal College of Business Career Center serves over 8,000 students each year. In addition to overseeing corporate relations, career fairs, on campus interviews, professional development, and career courses, the 11 member team also advises the operations of over 40 student organizations.
In 2015, the Career Center realized it was time to overhaul their digital presence. While Smeal has always provided their students with a wealth of valuable resources, disaggregation, lack of awareness, and an uninspiring digital space meant that tools and services were going underutilized, preventing students from getting the most out of the robust support offered at Smeal.
To remedy this, Smeal partnered with uConnect to build their intelligent career platform, which includes technical integrations with career resources and opportunities, fully customized automatic communications to students, digital Career Communities with content curated to specific career pathways, and more.
The platform is clearly resonating with students and the Smeal community, as evidenced by the sustained increase in web engagement since the platform’s launch over three years ago. The Career Center has also seen increases in enrollment for career courses, event attendance, coaching appointments, career fair attendance, and workshops by request since the platform’s launch.
