A new academic year has arrived, and so has September's Mid Month Memo! From focus groups 💬 to featuring classes 👨🏫, we have it all!
Last month's Client Spotlight highlighted the value of evolving your platform with student feedback (check it out here!). This month, one client partner is sharing their specific approach to gathering feedback from their stakeholders: focus groups.
Columbia University School of Professional Studies (Columbia SPS) recently launched their uConnect platform, the Career Design Lab. Ahead of that launch, they knew that connecting with students would be key, and that hosting a focus group would allow them to source direct feedback from crucial users of their platform. Greg Costanzo, Director of Employer Relations at Columbia SPS, shares more below on how they organized their focus group, as well as what the experience provided them:
"Moving over to a website powered by uConnect promises exciting new ways our students, alumni, and employers can learn about what our team does. In order to effectively plan the site’s launch, we knew that we needed feedback from our biggest stakeholder—our students. So with uConnect’s help, we conducted a focus group in early May consisting of eight students, representing voices from student government, graduate interns, and those less familiar with career services. We wanted to know what they felt were the most essential aspects of career services that they wanted to see on a website."
Greg continues that, "[f]rom what [students] shared, we were able to begin mapping out content that was captivating and accessible. And now that our site is launched, we plan to hold a couple more focus groups with students to fully assess the user experience. We want to know whether students are finding the content relevant and the site easy to navigate. Information gathered here will allow us to further enhance the platform."
Thank you to Greg for detailing your process and to the entire Columbia SPS team for your partnership! Explore Columbia University School of Professional Studies' platform here.

As a new academic year begins, this is the perfect time to incorporate Classes into your platform. Whether they be faculty-led, career development focused, skill-building centered or online opportunities, we can help you bring them to the forefront!
Using the Classes content type, found under the Publish section of your dashboard, it can be as easy as adding the title of the course, any descriptive information to catch your users' eye, and a link for more information. Once you're ready to share, tag away (making sure to tag to a Class Category, created from Manage > Content Categories!) and hit publish! Our support team, who you can reach through the chat feature on your dashboard, can set up a widget to host your new Classes, if one is not already configured.

The following partner institutions are having their uConnect birthdays this month (aka the anniversary of their platform launch, but more fun).
We're wishing a happy 9th birthday to Bentley University as well as a happy 6th birthday to Southern New Hampshire University! We're also celebrating the 5th birthday of Texas A & M University Mays Business School, the 3rd birthday of Edinboro University, as well as the 2nd birthday for Texas Woman's University. Last, but certainly not least, a happy first birthday to both Florida A & M University and Brandeis International Business School!
