The team at George Washington University's School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) excels at leveraging their uConnect platform in recruiting efforts. To learn about how and why the GW's recruiting teams show off their uConnect platform all over the world, we spoke with Chalvonna Smith, Director of Career Services at SEAS.
"When we first got uConnect at GW SEAS Careers, we intended for it to serve as our office website - something more dynamic than the traditional career services website; however, we quickly realized it could be used for so much more. About 4 years ago, we began using uConnect to complement our school's recruiting initiatives. According to the GW office of institutional research, the primary reason students chose to attend GW is career development and success. By making our services, resources, and other content available via uConnect, our admissions and recruiting teams are able to speak confidently and accurately with prospective students (and their parents) about industry trends, potential career paths, services, and other relevant data.
Additionally, uConnect provides us with the ability to curate content based on the school's recruiting schedule to illustrate how GW supports particular student interests. For example, when our recruiting team is at the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) annual conference, our office will feature the Women in Engineering Career Toolkit. We also use our content to support international recruitment. For example, if our recruiting team is in India, China, or Korea will be sure to highlight international student success stories so that prospective students can see real-life examples of how our team will support their career development upon arriving at GW.
Finally, by providing our recruiting team with information about career services via uConnect, they are able to introduce students to our office prior to the start of the semester. Thanks to our collaboration with the recruiting team, it is not uncommon for our office to be one of the first stops a new student makes when arriving on-campus (or the US for that matter!)."
If you’re looking for a new way to spur career conversations among students, our Outcome Data Visualization tool’s community filter feature is a great solution! This feature allows platform visitors to search for data that aligns with their unique interests, creating a more streamlined user experience, and avoiding the feeling of being overwhelmed by a surplus of unrelated content.
With the community ODV feature, your outcome data can feed into relevant uConnect communities, meaning a history community can have an ODV widget pull in data relating only to history majors who attended your college/university. Likewise, an art community can have a separate set of data featured in its community, pre-filtered to only include information about students who majored in art at your institution.
You even have the option to pull data from multiple majors onto a community! For example, an “Arts and Entertainment” community can be pre-filtered to feature data from Visual Arts, Photography, Theater, Music, and other majors falling under the “Arts & Entertainment” category.
Including the pre-filtered ODV widget in your various communities allows students to make more informed career and academic decisions, and provides a benchmark for comparing students’ experiences with alumni who majored in the same field(s).
For example, current students can see what kinds of internship and job experiences are valuable for their careers, and get inspired to pursue different opportunities, by looking at where alumni have interned and worked. This allows students to start thinking in advance about how they can prepare for their career or major, setting them up to be in a more successful position moving forward.
