Mid Month Memo: December

Mid Month Memo Header-1

A newsletter-style blog we'll be publishing every second Wednesday of the month. In the Memo, you'll find practical advice and best practices for using your uConnect platform, inspiration from other partner schools, news from the uConnect community, and more!

Nearly 3 years ago, UTSA partnered with uConnect to help scale their work providing individualized support for every student -- no small feat for a career center that serves over 20,000 undergraduate students. Now, UTSA has implemented uConnect’s Outcome Data Visualization tool to bring visibility and accessibility to their student outcome data.

This data is used in career development efforts -- by career services staff and students on their own -- to help direct pathways and inspire engagement. But the power of highly visible and filterable outcome data extends beyond the career center; it’s a great tool for overcoming prospective student and family concerns that their investment in higher education will yield positive career outcomes, and for academic departments, outcome data can help inform the development of programs that have certain applicability to the future careers of their students.

And already, other teams at UTSA are asking for and utilizing the Outcome Data Visualization tool. “Our Admissions office has the link to ODV on their website for parents and students that are asking for outcome data, and our colleges are looking and asking for the data as well,” says Yvonne Gonzalez, Interim Director and Associate Director of the University Career Center. And another great thing? ““Implementing the Outcome Data Visualization tool with uConnect was a quick and easy process. Practically overnight, our outcome data came to life, and is now interactive and readily available to our entire community.”

Check out UTSA’s Data Visualization here, and learn more about the Outcome Data Visualization tool here.

Quality and Size (or Resolution and Ratio)

If your images aren’t the right size they won’t fill the frame correctly, which looks messy and is distracting. This guide is your friend! Consult it frequently and faithfully to ensure that your images always look great.

Quality (Resolution)

Resolution describes the number of pixels in an image. If your image has low resolution, it’ll look grainy and less than awesome. The higher the number of pixels, the higher the quality.

Size (Ratio)

While often you can ensure that your image is the right size based on its resolution (1220px by 420px, for example, will tell you both size and resolution), sometimes you’ll be given an aspect ratio instead. In an aspect ratio, such as 2:1, the first number represents width, while the second represents height. With an aspect ratio of 2:1, your image should be twice as long as it is high. An image that is 500px by 250px will be the right size, as will an image that is 750px by 375 px, though the latter has a higher quality resolution.

When adding images to your platform, make sure to consider any text or overlays that may cover part of your image. Banner images on your homepage and header images on your community pages are the most common culprits. For example, make sure to avoid messes like these:

If you have the Upcoming Events overlay, make sure it doesn't obstruct any of your text.

Make sure text doesn't cover people's faces or other important parts of images.

Using icons is a great way to amp up the visual appeal of your platform, and to develop consistency on your platform (if you don’t know of our strong feelings about consistency, check out the uConnect DIY from November). You can add icons to the Hero Navigation menu on your front page. Check out the library of possible icons here, and if you want any added, just message us at! Another great idea is to create a unique icon for each of your career communities or audience groups. Apply that icon to the banner of the community or audience page, and then use it to identify other content -- such as blogs, resources, and job opportunities -- as relevant to the community or audience group. Check out Mercy College’s career communities for a great example!
