A newsletter-style blog published every third Wednesday of the month. In the Memo, you'll find practical advice and best practices for using your uConnect platform, inspiration from other partner schools, news from the uConnect community, and more!
Ensuring that students are aware of the career support available to them from the moment they arrive on campus is critical, but not necessarily easy. The team at the University of Missouri Career Center decided to integrate an event into incoming student orientation to get in front of new students right off the bat, and they got creative doing it! To learn more, we spoke with Amanda Nell, Senior Career Services Coordinator at Mizzou.
"The University of Missouri hosted a Career Carnival during the school’s Welcome Week, aimed at helping incoming students get oriented to the resources and services on the Mizzou campus. The Career Center transformed into a “big top” offering carnival-themed activities, including Career Jeopardy, Lollipop Surprise, Casino Dice and Career Putt Putt. While munching popcorn and cotton candy, students played games to earn points for prizes such as padfolios, water bottles and sunglasses. To highlight the new uConnect site (branded as Mizzou Career Tools), students selected a Dum Dum which had a colored tip corresponding to a career resource category or community on the uConnect site. Staff showed students how to use the resource filters to find targeted career information as well as other site features (career fairs, featured employers, etc.). Based on participation and positive student feedback, Mizzou plans to do this again next year!"
Thanks for the inspiration Amanda!
As the semester comes into full swing, one question we are often asked is: “How do I stay organized and make the most of my uConnect platform when there are so many projects and deadlines approaching?”
We understand that given your many other responsibilities, the idea of publishing regular blog, job, resource, and event content can seem, to put it lightly, overwhelming! But the good news is, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about and designing ways to keep your platform full of fresh content as quickly and easily as possible. One of the best tools for saving time and keeping organized is the Editorial Calendar.
Enhancing communications across your team, delegating responsibility, and diversifying the voice of your career center, the editorial calendar allows admin to schedule certain team members to be responsible for creating and/or publishing specific content! In addition to having the ability to schedule Admin, Staff, and Student Staff users to specific content, you can now schedule Community Experts with the editorial calendar too, allowing your office to further diversify its voice and increase community involvement.
In the editorial calendar, you also have the ability to select a date you need the content published by, describe the type of content you want featured (whether it is a job, resource, event, etc.), leave a note with specific requirements for publication, and select tags to indicate where the content should be featured! The best part? Recurring reminders can be set, notifying the person responsible for producing your content that a deadline is approaching!
Check out the video below for a tutorial on using the Editorial Calendar, or you can read the instructions in this article.
