A newsletter-style blog published every third Wednesday of the month. In the Memo, you'll find practical advice and best practices for using your uConnect platform, inspiration from other partner schools, news from the uConnect community, and more!
The DIY section in the March Memo was a tutorial on creating appealing banner images using the free and intuitive design tool, Canva. Though simple, the banner image should not be underestimated for its power to set the tone of your platform. The Wentworth Institute of Technology team are masters of the rotating banner on their uConnect platform, Co-ops + Careers. To hear from the experts themselves, we spoke with Abbey Pober, Assistant Director of Systems & Marketing.
“The rotating homepage banners have been a fantastic opportunity for us to highlight the success of our students, value of our office, and communicate priority messaging. Choosing the content for these features is driven by the goals of our strategic plan and the structure of our strategy. Right now, our focus for this space is to amplify the story of the Wentworth student and their professional growth from co-op to full-time hire and how our office assists along the way.
The four banners give us a lot of flexibility to stagger our strategy. While not complicated, our strategy is intentional. We reserve two spots for long term visuals which can remain for up to a year, one spot for a semester rotational, and one spot designated for ‘as needed’ features which can include events or major initiatives. Currently our long term banners are designated for showcasing key career outcomes from our Class of 2018 First Destination Survey and the impactful ways students and employers engage with The Center for Cooperative Education and Career Development at Wentworth. Our semester rotational is reserved for promoting Drop-In hours as it is important to the team that we increase awareness on campus that students have options to meet with their advisor outside of a scheduled appointment. Up through July 1, 2019, we are featuring a brand new entrepreneurial co-op where the hired student will have the opportunity to turn their own ideas into a business!"
"To create our visuals we primarily use Adobe Illustrator supported with a bit of Photoshop/Lightroom editing when needed. I prefer Illustrator over other design programs because it renders visuals with vectors rather than pixels, making it easy to resize and repurpose our designs (though Canva can be great for this too!). When designing, we incorporate a mix of photography, graphic details like icons, and good old text. These designs are intended to draw our audience in to learn more about what the banner is highlighting, and each is linked to a page on the site. Connecting the headers to expanded content is an important piece of our strategy and we leverage our visuals to inspire audience curiosity.”
Thanks for your insight and intentionality Abbey!

For our loyal readers, we have a very exciting DIY section for June. This hasn't been announced anywhere else yet, but we just released a brand new content type: PEOPLE!
The People content type is designed to promote mentors and advisors who can become vital figures in a student's professional journey. As with all things uConnect, tags will automatically pull each mentor onto the right community pages, allow users to filter the full range of People published to your platform, and indicate a particular mentor's expertise and areas of interest.
You'll find the new content type under Publish > People in your dashboard. Add information about each person, including a bio, image, job title, and links to their profiles on other platforms such as LinkedIn. Then tag the mentor with the appropriate tags, and hit publish!People information can show up in a few different ways:
- On a stand-alone profile page
- On the 'People' landing page, where all People will appear and can be filtered
- In either a sidebar widget or a horizontal widget on any Community or page you choose! Check out the sidebar widget ('Alumni Mentors') live on Ithaca College's platform.
The People content type was designed for seamless integration with campus mentor tools, such as PeopleGrove or Graduway. If you don't have a mentor tool or choose not to integrate with it, however, People can be added manually as well.
If you're interested in learning more about integrating with your mentor tool, or have any questions about the new People content type, just send us a message at firstname.lastname@example.org!
Welcome to the newest members of the uConnect community! Great things are ahead.
