A newsletter-style blog published every third Wednesday of the month. In the Memo, you'll find practical advice and best practices for using your uConnect platform, inspiration from other partner schools, news from the uConnect community, and more!
The Mercy College Career and Professional Development team works across four campuses supporting the diverse needs of their student body. Mercy’s team excels at producing a steady stream of fresh blog content for their community. One trick to their success managing content production is their use of the Editorial Calendar tool in the uConnect admin dashboard. “Currently we have the calendar set to remind the staff of when it is their turn to submit a blog post. We create all different types of blogs; we have some people who are writing blog series and others create blogs to promote events,” says Liam Ross-Fitzgibbons, Associate Director of Career and Professional Development. “The calendar helps us stay on top of when blogs are due and helps us to plan ahead with the blogs. It is very easy to set up a schedule for the semester.”
The Editorial Calendar is already in your dashboard waiting to help you and your team quickly and easily schedule and stay on top of content production. This article will walk you through everything you need to know to get going!
CHAPTER 2: MAKE YOUR SITE ENGAGING EPISODE 6: BLOG BEST PRACTICES
In this episode of the Client Marketing Guide, we'll be sharing some best practices for engaging students with blog posts. A few years ago, we worked with partner institution Brigham Young University Marriott School of Management to collect data and insight into what gets students to engage with content. In this project, we specifically focus on blogs, but many of these best practice insights can be applied to other kinds of student-facing content as well!
Blogs are an excellent option to provide information to students in a way that allows them to consume it in a self-directed way. Unlike other one-time communications like email, the blog remains in place to serve as a knowledge base. Additionally, engaging contributors outside the career center office to write blog posts is an excellent and relatively easy way to diversify the voice of the career center and the content you're able to provide.
So how can you best leverage your blog posts to reach your audience? According to BYU's analysis, the following practices can contribute to increased blog engagement:
1. Use photo thumbnails
To set a thumbnail for your blog post, simply edit the 'Featured Image' within the edit page for the blog
2. Create blog series
Make a point of delivering multiple, themed posts for maximum engagement
3. Publish more 'soft' content
In blogs, students seem to prefer 'self-help' type advice
4. Focus on blog headlines
The title of your blog has a significant impact on how likely students are to read it
Do you have insight and ideas about how to make content most appealing to students? We'd love to hear it! Send us a message at email@example.com to share your wisdom.
Welcome to the newest members of the uConnect community! Great things are ahead.
